They are also available with the option of matching metal bracelets too. These versions come equipped with Rolex innovative Oysterflex bracelet, with an elastomer reinforced with a metal blade, something we saw introduced on the 2015 Yacht-Master.
These three new versions of Rolex Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytonas come in 18-carat yellow, white or Everose gold. This year, during our meeting with the Rolex, they unveiled three new Daytona models that all sported the same Cerachrom bezel, with the option of a same metal bezel too. This year, the new Daytona models that were shown to us all featured meteorite dials, oh and did I forget to mention they are only available in precious metals? Alas, that call had been heeded and Daytona collectors could now rest easy – or so we thought. Ever since the Daytona 6240, 6241 and ultimately the 6263 that sported the ever fragile but seemingly downright cool, acrylic black bezel – Rolex owners had been crying out for something similar on Rolex latest Daytona. Five years ago, Rolex introduced a Daytona that many had anticipated: A Daytona with a Cerachrom bezel. Nowadays, Daytonas are among the most sought after Rolex models, fetching prices from $20,000 for modern ones to many millions for rare vintage references.We’ve covered the Rolex Daytona quite a lot here over the past years and with ever year that goes by, enthusiasts try to guess what Rolex will do with the Daytona and if they will ever release something more akin to the 6263. Most Daytonas languished in dealer displays for years and only started to get noticed by Italian collectors and dealers in the late 1980s. It's hard to imagine now, but Daytonas received little love after their release. Furthermore, the dial was updated with the introduction of contrasting sub-dials. The most noticeable difference between these Cosmograph (Daytona) models and earlier Rolex chronographs was the tachymeter scale (used for measuring distance and speed) that was moved from its traditional placement on the dial to the bezel. After a few years, the line was officially renamed Cosmograph Daytona, after the racetrack in Florida. In some early advertisements, Rolex referred to the watch as the ‘Le Mans’ after the famous race track in France, although the name never appeared on the dial.
Rolex Cosmograph Daytona Rolex started making chronographs in the 1930s, but it was only in 1963 that a named product line was introduced: the Cosmograph. The 116509, furthermore, sports Rolex’ first in-house automatic chronograph movement, that was introduced in 2000. The watch has some minor signs of wear, with some scratches here and there. The case has nice thick lugs and sharp edges, while the bracelet is still very tight. The watch dates back to 2008 and is in great condition. The ton-sur-ton look of the watch is tastefully broken up by the bright red chronograph hand and hands on the sub-counters. The dial sports 18k white-gold applied Roman hour markers and deeply recessed subdials. This effect is known as the Widmanstätten pattern and is caused by the occurrence of nickel-iron crystals in octahedrite iron meteorites. Meteorite is a mesmerizing material, not only due to its extraterrestrial origins but also its beautiful crosshatch structure that becomes visible as light hits it from different angles. The dial is cut from meteorite and it is simply out of this world (excuse the pun, again). The luxurious case, however, takes a backseat to the real star of the show: the dial. While it may look like steel to the undiscerning eye, the case and bracelet are moulded from 18k white gold and it’s noticeable as soon as you feel the heft on your wrist. *Cue rimshot* Alright, if you’ve recovered from that terrible pun we can get serious for a second. The only thing about the Daytona to come down is the meteorite that went into making this dial. Daytona prices have experienced a meteoric rise in the last decade.
